The University Endowment Act, 1868. The income accrued under this Act, and applicable to the purposes of higher education yet to be determined by Parliament, amounted, on the 31st March, 1909, to £292 2s. 6d., received from reserves in Westland.

General. Expenditure out of Public Funds on Education. An attempt is made in Tables N and Nl, 2, 3, 4, to analyse the public expenditure on the various branches of education, and to show under what heads tbe increase of expenditure in recent years has taken place; to give the expenditure per bead of the population and per bead of the roll of the schools, colleges, &c.; and to present a comparative statement of the increase in the number of persons under instruction. Tables N.and Nl give an analysis of the expenditure for tbe years 1908-9 and 1909-10 respectively.
