Extract from the Report of the Managers of rut: Ashburton Associated Classes. In submitting the annual report for the year ended 31st December, 1909, the Managers have pleasure in reporting another year's successful work. The attendances at most of the classes have been well maintained, while a marked increase is noticeable in several instances, and the. instructors aud students continue to take an enthusiastic interest in the work. During the year several new classes have been started, including drawing, painting, repousse work, and enamelling, which, under capable and enthusiastic instructors, have made highly satisfactory progress. A dressmaking class was opened at Dunsandel for the last term of the year, twenty students attending, and the financial results being very satisfactory. An exhibition of work done by students attending the cookery, dressmaking, woodwork, wool-sorting, drawing, painting, and repousse-work classes was held in December, and proved the most successful of the kind ever held in Ashburton, and it has done much towards awakening public interest in the classes. The main difficulty with which the Managers have to contend is still the. lack of proper accommodation for the steadily increasing number of classes, which acts as a serious deterrent to the proper development of the work. We sincerely hope that it will not be long before suitable buildings are erected on the very desirable site offered by the Borough Council. Generous financial assistance has been received from the Ashburton County and Borough Councils, High School Board, Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and the borough and Hampstead School Committees, and also from a number of private subscribers. The lively interest exhibited by members of the above bodies in our work has been of great assistance to, and is appreciated by, the Managers. In conclusion, the Managers desire to acknowledge their appreciation of the courteous consideration and assistance they have received at the hands of the North Canterbury Education Board and its officers during the year.
