evening technical classes have benefited by the receipt of voluntary contributions from the local bodies as under : Borough Council, £25 ; Bluff Harbour Board, £30 ; Southland County Council, £25. These amounts were received with thanks, and have been spent in providing proper equipment for the build-ing-construction, machine-construction, magnetism and electricity, chemistry, and art classes. The thanks of the Board are also due to several private firms and individuals for donations in aid of the work. Again, as in former years, an exhibition of the work of the school was held at the close of the session, and in this way the benefits to be derived from attendance at the classes were brought prominently before the public. Owing to the establishment of a High School at Gore, the classes which have been conducted at that centre were passed over to the control of the Gore High Schools Board as from the end of the year 1908. At Bluff and Mataura, however, successful classes were continued as formerly. At Greenhills and Charlton classes were conducted by the teachers in charge of their respective schools. It is a difficult task to have classes established in the smaller centres, but there are several towns in the Southland District where, were a beginning made, successful work might be accomplished. I refer to such places as Riverton, Orepuki, Otautau, Winton, Wyndham, and Queenstown. These are fairly large townships, and efficient instructors could be found within their own borders to teach whatever subjects it might be found desirable to place on the syllabus, but local enthusiasts in the cause of technical education at these centres have not yet been found. Inspector Isaac, of the Education Department, visited the classes during the month of June. In connection with the annual examinations of the City and Guilds of London Institute, held at the end of May, and of the Board of Education South Kensington, London, held at the end of June, six first-class and seven second-class certificates were obtained by candidates.
