I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, No. 119, of the Ist August, forwarding addresses from the Legislative Council and the House of Representatives expressing deep sympathy with the Empress and Royal Family of Japan and with the Japanese nation on the death of His Imperial Majesty the late Emperor. 2. The substance of these addresses was conveyed to me in your telegram of the same date, and was duly communicated by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to the Japanese Ambassador. A copy of a note from His Excellency expressing the thanks of the Royal Family of Japan and of the Japanese nation was transmitted to you in my despatch, No. 248, of the 23rd August. I have, &c, L.
