Compared with 1914 the expenditures of the Federal and State Governments of Australia rose from £68,113,287 to £147,944,465—that is, by £79,831,178. Per Capita Expenditure Increases, Australian States, 1914-1921. The following table shows the increase in the expenditure of the several Australian States, together with their proportionate share of the Commonwealth Government's expenditure, which must necessarily be shown in any comparison between the expenditure by the Government of this country and that of the Australian States, which divide the functions of government with the Commonwealth, whereas in this Dominion they are all discharged by the one Government: —
