In the previous section, entitled " Elimination of Large Classes," reference was made to steps that had been taken to staff the primary schools more liberally. The following figures give further evidence of what has been done in this direction during the last few years : —

Teachers' Salaries. The total amount of all salaries and allowances for the year ending 011 the 31st March, 1929, was £1,781,389, or £17,54.1 more than in the previous year. These figures do not include the equivalent of house allowance where residences are provided, estimated at £51,204, nor the additional amounts paid to head teachers for the supervision of secondary departments of district high schools. The total cost of salaries and allowances (including the sum saved in house allowances) works out at £8 7s. 6d. per head of the total roll number, the corresponding amount in 1927 was £8 ss. id. This table shows that 35 per cent, of the certificated male teachers receive salaries over £400 per annum and 57 per cent, receive salaries over £350. Of the certificated women teachers 40 per cent, receive salaries in excess of £250.
