The first term of design-registration lasts for five years, and, though the protection may be renewed for a further term of five years, only a. comparatively small number of such renewals is effected. A further extension of five years, making fifteen years in all, may be applied for, but the number of such applications is almost negligible. The total number of applications up to the 31st December, 1928, was 2,695, and the number of registrations in force on that date was 860. During the year there were 55 extensions for the second period and 2 extensions for the third period. Trade-marks. The fees received during the year in respect of trade-marks amounted to £3,461 16s. Id., being a slight increase in the amount for 1927, in which year £3,370 17s. was received. The applications lodged for the year totalled 1,201, as against 1,325 in 1927, the number in that year being the largest number received in any one year, with the exception of the years 1920, 1924, and 1925, when there were 1,391, 1,338, and 1,332 respectively. The applications received from persons residing in New Zealand numbered 477 (460). Residents in Great Britain lodged 316 (284) applications, and 206 (189) applications were received from the United States of America. Applications from the Australian Commonwealth were as follows : New South Wales, 68 (66) ; Victoria, 26 (66) ; Queensland, 2 (0) ; South Australia, 2 (1) ; Tasmania, 2 (0). There were 11 (10) from Canada, and 54 (202) from Germany. The number of applications received up to the 31st December, 1889, was 1,213. From that date to the 31st December, 1928, 27,217 applications were lodged, making a total of 28,430. Applications were greatest in number in the following classes of goods : —" Substances used as food or as ingredients in food " (Class 42), 181 (203) ; " Articles of clothing " (Class 38), 101 (115) ; " Candles, common soap, detergents ; illuminating, heating or lubricating oils ; matches ; and starch, blue, and other preparations for laundry purposes " (Class 47), 87 (76) : " Chemical substances prepared for use in medicine and pharmacy " (Class 3), 82 (67) : " Machinery of all kinds and parts of machinery, except agricultural and horticultural machines included in Class 7 " (Class 6), 67 (35). Patent Agents. No names were added to the register during the year. The total number of names on the register as at 31st December, was twenty. Conclusion. The appendix hereto contains the following tables, lists, &c., viz. : — A. Receipts and Payments Account for the Year ended 31st December, 1928. B. Table showing Receipts and Payments for each of the Last Ten Years. C. Particulars of Fees received from Ist January to 31st December, 1928, together with the Corresponding Figures for the years 1926 and 1927. D. Number of Provisional and Complete Specifications received, &c. F. Number of Applications for Patents from Persons residing in New Zealand or Dependencies, &0., and in other Countries in each of the Years 1927 and 1928, together with the Average for the Years 1922-26 (inclusive). G. Number of Applications for Patents for the Different Classes of Inventions in each of the Years 1927 and 1928, together with the Average for the Years 1922-26 (inclusive). H. Total Number of Applications for Patents, Letters Patents sealed, and Letters Patent in force for Full Term under the Different Patents Acts, up to 31st December, 1928 (inclusive). I. Number of Applications for Registration of Designs in each of the Fifteen Classes in each of the Years 1926, 1927, and 1928. J. Number of Applications for Registration of Trade-marks from Persons residing in New Zealand or Dependencies, &c., and in other Countries in each of the Years 1927 and 1928, together with the Average for the Years 1922-26 (inclusive).
