Leave of Absence for Education and Training Purposes. During the year the following officers were granted special leave of absence, in some cases to permit them to proceed abroad for the purpose of extending their knowledge and experience, and in others to enable them to pursue their studies : — Arnold, E. H., Clerk, Agriculture Department, Auckland : To take course at Hawkesbury Agricultural College. Waters, D. F., Assistant Analyst, Agriculture Department, Wellington: To prepare thesis for Honours degree in science. Calder, R. A., Instructor in Agriculture, Agriculture Department, Timaru : To proceed to Edinburgh to take Ph.D. degree in animal genetics. Wylie, Miss C. E., Organizing Teacher, Special School, Education Department, Otekaike ; and Fraser, Miss A. S., Teacher, Special School for Girls, Education Department, Richmond : To visit United States of America, Canada, and Great Britain to study latest methods adopted in dealing with subnormal children. Campbell, R. M., Private Secretary, Internal Affairs Department, Wellington : To take up Commonwealth Fund Service Fellowship (America). Harrison, S. S., Engineer's Assistant, Public Works Department, Auckland : To gain further engineering experience abroad. In addition to the foregoing, the following officers were granted leave of absence for the purpose stated : — Cunningham, I. J., Clerk, Chemical Laboratory, Agriculture Department, Wellington : To exchange with officer of the Rowett Institute, Aberdeen. Simmers, R. G., Meteorological Assistant, Scientific and Industrial Research Department, Wellington : To join Mawson Antarctic Expedition. Young, M. W., Marine Biologist, Marine Department, Wellington : To accompany Danish Scientific Fisheries Expedition. Departmental Officers on Loan to other Administrations.
