NORTH AUCKLAND MAIN HIGHWAYS. RETURN SHOWING ESTIMATED COST OF EAST AND WEST COAST HIGHWAYS BETWEEN AUCKLAND AND MAUNGATUROTO.
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated 7th August, 1929. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing the estimated cost respectively of the East Coast and West Coast Highways in that portion of the North Auckland district lying between Auckland and Maungaturoto." —(Mr. Uaknard.)
RETURN. In December, 1926, the District Engineer, Whangarei, estimated the cost of re-formation and metalling of several routes for the main highway between Auckland and Wellsford. At the time he estimated the cost as follows :— Route. Estimated Cost. Eastern route —Birkenhead to Wellsford .. .. .. .. .. £141,428 Western route —Avondale to Wellsford .. .. .. .. .. £256,800 The main highway now under construction by the eastern route is being constructed to a different standard from that which was. the basis of the estimate, and the cost of both routes to the standard that has been adopted would show a variation accordingly. The distance between Wellsford and Maungaturoto, twenty-one miles, is substantially common to the three routes and does not affect the comparison. 7th August, 1929.
