To His Excellency the Governor-General. In accordance with the provisions of the University of Otago Ordinance, 1869, I have the honour to forward herewith a report on the proceedings of the University of Otago for the year ended 31st December, 1929. The Council. —During the year Dr. Inglis felt it necessary to tender his resignation as a member of the Council, and this resignation the Council accepted with much regret, since Dr. Inglis during his brief term of office had proved himself a very valuable member. To fill the vacancy thus created, the Professorial Board reappointed to the Council Sir Lindo Ferguson, who had previously represented the Board for many years. Teaching Staff. —There have been no changes in the professoriate during the past year, and changes in the staff of lecturers are referred to in the Dean's reports. I would draw attention, however, to the creation of two new offices. One of these is the position of Lecturer in Economics, and the other that of assistant to the Professor of Education. The gentleman appointed to the first position is Mr. G. C. Billing, 8.A., whilst Mr. H. C. McQueen, M.A., has been appointed as assistant in Education. The latter will take over the training of students in experimental pedagogy, a branch of the work which the Council has been unable to undertake previously, and which it hopes to develop in succeeding years. Home Science Extension. —The most important new development which has occurred during the year is the establishment of the home-science-extension movement. This has been made possible by a gift from the Carnegie Trustees of the sum of £1,500 per annum for a period of five years. The object
