Designs. The number of applications for registration of designs lodged during 1932 was 164. This number is 13 more than in 1931. The total number of applications up to the 31st December, 1932, was 3,304, and the number of registrations in force at that date was 902, of which 160 were registered during the year. Renewal of the term of copyright for the second term of five years was effected in 36 cases, while 7 registrations were renewed for the third term of five years. 134 design registrations became void during the year by reason of the non-payment of renewal fees. Applications from persons resident in New Zealand totalled 116 (110) ; 18 (21) were from Great Britain ; 27 (17) from Australia ; 2 (1) from the United States of America ; and 1 (0) from France. The majority of the applications were lodged in respect of articles included in Classes 1, 3, 11, and 12, the figures for each class being 66, 40, 15, and 17 respectively. The remaining 26 applications were spread over seven classes. In four classes no applications were lodged. The fees received during the year amounted to £147 13s. 6d., which is in excess of the amount received in 1931. Trade-marks. The number of applications for registration of trade-marks filed in 1932 was 74 less than in the previous year, there being 925 and 999, respectively. New Zealand applications showed an increase on the previous year of 29, and applications from Great Britain an increase of 43, while decreases in the number- of applications from the United States of America, Commonwealth of Australia, and Germany were 48, 33, and 15 respectively. As was to be expected, there was a falling-off in the fees paid in respect of trade-marks, the amount for the year being £3,207 4s. 10d., as compared with £3,966 12s. Id. for 1931, in which latter year an unusual number of trade-mark registrations were renewed. Again, the greatest number of applications in any one class was in Class 42 (substances used as food, or as ingredients in food) with a total of 204. The second greatest number was in Class 38 (articles of clothing) with 81. Next in order comes Class 3 (chemical substances prepared for use in medicine and pharmacy), in which there were 72. While the number of applications in the majority of classes varied only slightly, Class 8 (philosophical instruments, scientific instruments, and apparatus for useful purposes ; instruments and apparatus for teaching) has 43 as against 34 for 1931, and Class 45 (tobacco, whether manufactured or unmanufactured) 29 as against 16 in the preceding year. In Class 22 (vehicles) there was 1 more application than in 1931, when there were 9. Patent Agents. The number of patent attorneys on the register as at 31st December, 1932, was 18. One name was added during the year, and one name was removed. Conclusion. The appendix hereto contains the following tables, lists, &c, viz. : — A.
