Staff Statistics. The following return shows the number of permanent officers and the total annual salaries payable as at Ist April, 1930, and as at the Ist April, 1934. Omitting the Mental Hospitals Department, where the staff has increased owing to (a) the increase in the number of patients, and (b) the improvement in the standard of treatment of patients in conformity with the development of humanitarian methods involving closer personal attention to the patients, it will be noticed that during the period under review the number of persons employed has decreased by 529, and the total annual salaries by £431,066, or, after allowing for the 5-per-cent. increase recently authorized by the Finance Act (No. 2), 1934, by £409,513.
