PROGRESS OF CAMPAIGN AGAINST TUBERCULOSIS IN NEW ZEALAND. The campaign against tuberculosis in New Zealand has proceeded along similar lines as reviewed, in the July, 1934, issue of the Bulletin of the International Union against tuberculosis. This article, however, will serve to provide up-to-date statistical information and indicate additional administrative measures taken in the campaign against this disease. The following table shows the tuberculosis death-rate per 10,000 of population :—

The 1935 figure is the lowest so far recorded in this country. Tuberculosis of the respiratory system took sixth place in point of the number of deaths resulting from principal causes during 1935, ranking after heart-disease, cancer, cerebral haemorrhage and apoplexy, accidents, and nephritis in that order. Of the 576 deaths from tuberculosis in 1935, 471 were assigned to pulmonary tuberculosis and 105 to other forms of the disease. Pulmonary Tuberculosis. The following table shows the downward movement of the death-rate at various ages and for the sexes separately since the beginning of the century. An interesting feature of the table is the failure of the young adult female of twenty to twenty-five years to participate in the improvement during 1909-28. The death-rate for females in this age-group, however, showed a fall for the period 1929-33 and for 1934-35.
