RANGE TIME-TABLE.
Julv 18-Martini-Henri Rifle Club. , . July 25—Auckland Navals, Ponsonby Navals (res. marker). GOVERNMENT INSPECTION PARADES. July 21—Victoria Rifles, City Guards, Royal Irish, Garrison Band.
I AM very sorry to say that I am afraid Captain Tobin of the Royal Irish Rifles is inclined to be a little too autocratic with his corp, the consequence being that several of his best non-commissioned officers have thrown up their stripes, and reverted to the ranks. . It is said they would have resigned, but in view of the corps not carrying on, they fail to see why they should throw up their claim to a division of the “ spoil.” I have heard another side to this story, which will be dealt with next week. It is really too bad the manner in which Captain Cooper neglects his corps, on the plea, I am told, of ill-health, and whilst I fully sympathise with anyone afflicted, I cannot help remarking that by attending a drill occasionally Captain Cooper would not himself do any more harm than attending football matches, etc., in wet and cold weather. Lieut. Somers is the officer who can take full credit for keeping the “ Good Old Vics.” together. Messrs. Garlick & Cranwell, the well-known upholsterers and furniture dealers of Queenstreet, have sent a very nice letter sympathising with the members of the late “O” Battery, in which they blame the business people of the city to a great extent for the languishing interest taken in volunteering, and in order to show their practical interest they have given the Victoria Rifles prizes to the value of £2O to fire for, and they hope that other firms will follow their example. . . “Chris” Smith and Breen have joined the Auckland Navals. There was a good muster of both torpedo and gun detachments on Friday night, Lieutenants Smith aud Little being m command. . . x . The Naval Artillery are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Inspecting Officer to pass them in torpedo drill, for which every man who passes receives a badge and £l. Captain Falkiner came up from Wellington last year for this work. 1 hear that Captain Powell of North. Head has written to Wellington, asking if he may undertake the duty, but has not yet received a reply. . There were no less than forty competitors from the “A” Battery for Captain Geddes’ prizes at the Mount Eden Rifle Range on Saturday last. The conditions were A and “B” teams 7 shots each at 500, 300, and zoo yards; “C” team 10 shots at 200 and 300. The following are the names and scores of the prize takers : — r « A » team.
On the 4th inst. a rifle match had been arranged between the Auckland City Guards and the Dargaville Rifle Club, on their own range, 5 shots each at 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards The City Guard’s team did not put in 'an appearance, and consequently the country team will have to fire a second time. Their scores were: — Name 200yds 300yds 400yds 500yds Tl.
From inquiries made we have reason to believe that the new trotting club will affiliate with the Auckland Trotting Club in preference to the Southern Association.
