Auckland, February 12. It is proposed to give a citizens' ball m honor of his Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Onslow on their arrival m Auckland. The Huntley mining cases arestill being heard, a large amount of evidence having now been taken m support of the charge that the dip was not properly timbered. Some of the witnesses deposed that the ground was treacherous. The case for the defence will probably be opened tomorrow. Sir George Grey lias returned from Rotorua. His health appears to be almost entirely recovered. Wanganui, February 11. The Girls' College was opened to-day by the Hon. W. P. Reeves, Minister for Education. The Premier and Messrs T. EL. McDonald and Bryce, M.H.R's., were also present. Mr Gilbert Carson, Chairman of the Board of Governors, presided. There was a large concourse of people, notwithstanding the bad weather. The Ram Fair was concluded to-day. The total entries were 1165. The bidding was brisk, the highest prices being 27gs, 25gs, 20gs, and 12gs. Very few lots were passed m. The fair was altogether a great success. Woodville, February 12. The heavy rain, which set m last night has brought down a large slip on the Gorge line this morning. It is stated that this slip will delay the opening of the line for a month. Wellington, February 12. A fire broke out this evening m the engine room of Waddell and McLeod's sawmills m the centre of the town, find ! got a good hold, but was suppressed befoi • much damage had been don*. The Premier and Minister of Education left for Wanganui this morning. Dunedin, February 12. At a meeting of the Kakanui Relief Committee subscriptions to the amount of £65 were reported.
