[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

Auckland, April 14. Sir H. Atkinson and Capt. Russell arrived from Sydney by the Mahapouri to-day. Wellington, April 13. The Minister for Defence intends to place the fortifications and Permanent Artillery m the four centres under the control 1 of the Officers Commanding the Volunteers m the respective districts. Tha Captains commanding the Permanent Artillery are already under notice. Thore will be a Sergeant-Major m direct charge of each discrict. The "Volunteers and Militiamen will occasionally drill together, and a surprise alarm will be given shortly to test the efficiency of the working. Colonel Hume has resigned the Inspectorship of Volunteers.
