CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB METROPOLITAN MEETING.
The great sporting festival of the year commences at Uiccarton on Monday, this day huving been fixed upon, though not altogether convenient for visitors from a distance, on account of its being a public holiday m honor of the Prince o£ Wales' Birthday. The second day's racing takes place on Wednesday, and the meeting concludes on Saturday. The meeting promises to be very successful ; .more horses m training are at Iticcarton than has been the case since Spade Guinea's year, I^SU, and visitors from all parts, of New Zealand are wending their way iv shoals towards Christ - church. Many improvements have been made m the accommodation for spectators at I^iccarton, and the racecourse itself is said to be m better order thin it has ever been m befqre. The payupnt for the ten events, that have Anally closed number 123, agonist 92 las,t November, so that large iields are assured. The railway arrangements admit of Ashburton visitors returning home after each day's races, but we are, as usual, left out m the cold as regards cheap fares. However, many Avshburtonites will see the racing, and hope for the success of the locally-brad and locally owned horses.
