BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the AshbburBorough Council was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, (presiding), and Crs Orr, Jones, Anderson, Collins, Thomas, Flower, Stephens and Sealey. FINANCE-./ His Worship apologised, for the absence of Cr Cuthbertson and reported the debit balance at the bank to be £1128 and receipts from all sources since last meeting £84 9s 61, CHARITABLE AID BOARD. The Charitable aid Board wrote suggesting that the Council might forward their contributions monthly, a« the Board desired to make this practice general. It was resolved to acknowledge the letter and comply with the request." The Board also wrote requesting the Council to appoint some* one to represent them at the election of members of the Charitable Ad Board; The Mayor was unanimously appointed* BY-LAWS. Mr F. Ferriman applied for permission to proceed with the erection of a wooden building next the post office as he had not been aware the site was within the building block when he commenced it. The Mayor gave notice of motion for next meeting ro moTe that the by-law relating to building blocks be altered so as to make Havslock street instead of Peter street the northern boundary of the block, and the whole matter was deferred (ill next meeting. ENGINEERS 1 KKPORT. The Engineers' report was read as follows : Labor Gang.—The labor gang have been engaged in lowering and re-forming East street near the North-east Belt, carting clay from Northeast Belt for blinding shingle, spreading and rolling same, carting soil to sections, watering streets, ploughing out side channels on Atford Forest Road, carting grass ani rubbish from street*, making and putting in culvert Alford Forest Road, making addition to pavilion in the Domain, attending to water supply and other main, teuance work. Watering contract. —On account of the unsatisfactory manner in which the contract wss being carried on, we had to notify the contractor to that effect, on which he left the work. Sleeman has been carrying it on since with one of the Councils horses. It will be for your decision whether the next tender be accepted or the watering be done by day work as before. The report was adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE. A number of applications for small works were referred to the Works Committee, as was the acceptance of another tender for watering the streets, the contractor having thrown up the job. BARING SQIXABE. The Engineer was instructed to give notice to the person who had bought the grass to get it off at once. TALUAWON. The tender ot Mr F. Makeig at £13 13s for the valuation of the borough was accepted. OENER4L ELECTION. The use of the library wai granted to the returning officer for polling day. DOMAIN. The use of the Domain was granted to Ariel Bicycle Club on December 6. licenses. A carriers license was granted to James Elliot. BOROUGH SURVEY. The consideration of this and some other matters were deferred till next meeting. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £86 18 lid were passed for payment and the meeting ad* journed, after a sitting of thirty-five minutes only, as many members desired to attend the scripture text meeting.
