DRURY. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Friday, October 9.

A rumour was current liera yestuday, that a native had beeu shot bv one of the sentries at St. John's Redoubt, and that other natives weie in the vicinity. I suppose Urn same repoit lias leached Auckland. It is not yet sufficiently coufiuned. Another man was biought to the hospital yesterday, having been nccidently wounded in the wiist tluough the discharge of a lifle. Ho was one of the ISth, stationed at Kirikiri Redoubt. Guns have been forwaided to thoFi out; and the flying column is about to proceed theie. "Wairoa was to have been the destination of Colonel Nixon's foice, but the order was counteimauded, and it will now proceed to Pokeno. More cattle aio being thiven down the countiy, belongiiii; chiefly to Mews. BucUl.wd and Hawke. It is satisfiiotoiy to know that proper stept arc being taken to pi otnote "the scheme of aiailw.vy to Dairy. In due time no doubt it will be accomplished.

Vacaxcv is the Provinciu, Council. — It will je &fpn by an advertisement in another column, Mint Sir. Joseph Newman has offeied himself as :v canhclate for the vacancy in tlie Provincial Council for ;he Electoinl district of Raglan, caused by the legislation of Mr. R. O. Stewart. Otago. — By tho ' Wild Wave,' which arrived yes;culay fiom Lyttelton wo have news from Otago na that port to tho 2Sth ult The last escort brought lown 18,500 07.». gold, and the pvosnects of the Jiggers wet e said to be favomable. Tho mate and saptaiu of the 'Pride of the Yarra," tho vessel that -an down the 'Favourite,' thioiigh which so many lives weie lost, had been tried for manslaughter and icqmttcd. The "All England Eleven," expected >hoitly in Austialia, are to play a match with an 11 All New Zealand Twenty-two" in Dunedin. Child Di>ektiox.— -On Thursday night, at halflast nine o'clock, a child, between eighteen months md two yeai s of age, was found lying at the door of Mr. T. Henderson, off Princes- stteefc, evideutly placed iheio intentionally by some person then unknown. Che child was taken caie of, and the Commissioner >f Police informed of tho encumstance. That gen;lcmau at once took steps to discover the offender, vud on tho following morning found that a person in nale attire had been down to the steamer ' Corio ' ;iK|iiiuiig about a passage to Dunudiu. Tlio commissioner succeeded m ttaciug out the peison in question, and saw her (for she was a female dixguUed in male's attire) coming out of Onuckshank, Smait, md (Jo.'s, the agents of the 'Goiio,' where she had boon about her pwsage money. The suspicions of Mr. Naughtoii being sufficiently moused aa to her l>cing the offending paity, be followed her up High--ticefc, and on her coming out of a cook shop ho uitetrogatcd her, and requosted th.it hlie .should follow lum to the police office, telling hoi that he knew she was df-gmsed. The woman followed with .some leluctaucc, gave her name as Caroline Lindsay, and admitted the soft impeachment of being out of her pioper element— crinoline — and explained it by saying that she wanted to go to Dunedin to visit her husband theie. She said she had one child, which was at Mis. Lewis's school, in Shoi bland Cicscent, but denied having any other child. Mr. N. vugh ton then went to Mrs. Lewis's, and found that the woman's statement was conect, that she had a child there of five years of ago, for which she had paid a quaiter's board and schooling. On asking the child where her father was she said he was dead, and that she had a little Ri&ter. This, of. couise, went to refute the mothci's statement, and the commissioner had the chijd left at Mr. ilendevbon's honso brought down to Mrs. Lewis's school, and the two clnldien immediately lecognised each otlior. On this being told to the mother she admitted tho offence chaiged against her, and said she intended, when s>he got money at Duncdm, to send for the childien. She was placed in custody, and will be charged at the police couit, this morning, with child desertion. The tact and energy displayed by Mr. Naughtoii in tracing out tho offender with so little due to her whereabouts, is leally veiy commendable. Naval Fukckal. — Y ebterday af ternoon the funeral of Mr. Edwin Miller, aged forty three years, late first-class petty officer on board tho 'Miranda,' and who had been ill some tinie previous to his death, took place at the cemetery, Symonds-street. The funeral ceremony over, the sailors returned to Wynyard Pier and went on board their respective vessels, and the Naval Volunteei s marched to the barrack square, where they were dismissed. Fish from tiib Great B vrribr. — It may possibly bo interesting to our readers to learn that an experiment is about to be made to test tho profitableness | or otherwise, of introducing a inoro plentiful supply I of fjah into Auckland, instead of being clopoudoni; upon tho itinerant Maori vendors of liawhias and Bohnfippeyi. A quantity of ilsli packed in casks aro now on theiv way to Auckland from the Great Barrier Island ; and should the demaud justify it, further shipments will be made. Tho iis.li aio to | arrive per ' Swallow,' and will then be offered for sale by public auction. It may be expected that in these times of: dear meat aud provisions, a satisfactory sale -will bo effected. A motion by Mr. Allan O'Neill, to have tho necessary survey made for connecting the Waitemata river with tho waters of the Kaipara by a tramroad, wai agreed to.
