THE TEACHING OF FRENCH. STRONG VIEWS BY A TEACHER.
WELLINGTON. Last night. Mr F. L. Combs, headmaster of Mount Cook Scliool, in an address at lc-night's meeting ot the Wellington Scliool Committees' Association, said, "I clefy anyone to show in regard to children or universitv students that French has any real value to any more than a very small proportion. Not more than one per cent benefit by the learning of French. It is a criminal waste, for which the autliorities should be brouglit to book and required to sliow the practical value of French if its teaching were admitted to primary schools." Tlie speaker also condemned tlie teaching of Lntin or matliemntics af> utilitv subjects. He thonglit tlie minority report of tlie scliool syllabus rcvision committee grappled properly with the problem.
