A WOMAN'S DRESS BILL
£300 SPEXT IN A FORTNIGHT. "This lavisli dressing recalls the days of tlie French Itevolution and sets a good many Immhle people wondering in these days, wlien there are so many hard-up and uneniployed," declared Judge Sir Alfred Tobin in the course of the hearing of a recent case at tlie Wostminster County Court. When an application was made for a committal order against Miss Iris Iiarrold respocting £300, due to a firm for dresses, the Judge expressed surprise tliat she slioukl liave been allowed to run up tlie account in ahout a fortnight. A witness for the firm explained that Mi ss Harrold's mctliod of living at expensive hotels in the West End suggested tliat she was able to pay. The Judge: I nm thinking rather of the metliods of the firm. (To Miss Hhrrold). : Have you any money of your own ? IMiss Harrold : No. The Judge : I caiinot make an order against a young woman nierely in tlie hope tliat someone else will pay. Miss Harrold : Every time I went tliere I was asked to huy more. The Judge: Had you been a enstomer? — No, I opened an account with £50. I think T hought the first dress three months beforc. Sir Alfred called attention to a list 'oi 12 dresses, at priees ranging from £15 to £40 each, and a hat at £13, which, he stated, appeared to liave been supplied 011 credit in about a fortnight in Julv. "I think it is perfectly disgraceful on both sides," commcnted Sir Alfred. For the firm it was stated tliat Miss Harrold had offered £10 a month. Miss Harrold explained that slie was seeking enlployment at a film studio. She eonld always borrow £10 when she wnnted it. The Judge: The case is adjourned indefinitely.
