GOYERNMENT MAKES PROPOSALS. The Napier Citv Council has been er-deavounng for some time to seeure tho permission of tlie Government co e.s.teiul the tramway lines over the Hastings street railway crossing, witli a_ view to ruuning the cars into tlie Napier South area. Mr II. H. Storlmg, the gener-il manager of tlie New Zealand Railwoy Department, visitcd Napier recently ar.cl conl'erred witli the council on the question. ^ Air Sterling received reports from the dopartmental officers on tlie quest:on of allowing the trams to go over tlie line, and has submitted to tho rouncil alternative schcmes at different costs to enable the extension to be carried out. Mr Sterling indicates to the council tliat he prefers a scheme estimated to cost £9^0. Tlie Mayor, Mr J. Yigor Brown, sccn on tlie mattor to-day, stated tliat the question would be considered at tlie liioeting of the council to-night, when, lie tlionccht, the proposals of the department would prove acceptable Lo ciie council.
