EASY WIN FOR HASTINGS
SOME OF THE STARS IN ACTION. MILL AND GRENSIDE APPEAR. V Chief interest in the game at Nelson Park, Hastings was centred on the match between Hastings and Hastings H.S.O.B., on account of the fact that tne latter team is a new senior combination, whilst in the former the two All Black stars, Bert Grenside and Jimmv Mill, were seen in action. The game provided some sparkling first-of-the-season Rugby, the two All Blacks showing to good advantage. Hastings lan up a big score, in the first spell, vhen they had the wind, but in the Sfccond spell. the game was very even and interest ing. Hastings started the game, Fisfier kicking olf with a strong rear wind. For a time Old Boys pressed , but Grenside relieved with a fine run to the five yar3 line. The Yellows were driven back, but carae again from a penalty kick. Play continued in Old Boys' 25 and then Shepherd got off from a pass by Mill. He made a wild pass but Pearson was on hand and touched down near tlie upright. Grenside missed an easy kick. Hastings 3 H.S.O.B 0 Hastings forced the issue again, but were driven back and in a kandy position Miller evened tlie tallies with a fine penalty against tbe wind, the ball just skiiflming over the bar. Hastings 3 H.S.O.B 3 Centre play followed, Old Boys showing up best. They gained advgntage from a fine run by Probert and for some time menaced tbe Yellow line. Nlill cleared in time, but back agairi went Old Boys and Hannigan marked in a good position amidst c-beers. He piloted the ball over the bar, the score reading H.S.O.B 6 Hastings 3 Hastings appeared to be a bit rattled by this reverse, but attacked strongly, and from a scramble near the line Pearson got over for his second try. This time Grenside converted. Hastings 8 H.S.O.B 6 Heartened by this success, Hastings, with the Mills- Grenside combination shining, went to it again, and from a good passing rush Grenside got across in the corner. He converted with a brilliant kick. Hastings 13 H.S.O.B 6 From another opening made by Mill. Hastings broke away, but were pullod up by olf-side play. Old Boys launcbed an attack, but failed to sustairi it, Bramwell saving with a "liner." Centre play ensued_, and then Mill worked the blind to Grenside, who sent play to the Old Boys' 25. Next Mill Campbell and Bramwell broke clear, but the latter's pass to Shepherd was not taken and a great chance was lost. Another break away by Mill ended in Milson getting over under the bar, giving Grenside an easy conversion. The half-way whistle sounded innnediately with the score Hastings 18 Hastings H.S.O.B. ... 6 ■ Following "leinons," Old Boys lost no time in making good use of the wind and Kingston had to "line" to stem the Blue rush. Play went back to mid-field, but again Old Boys attacked, only to be stopped by offside play. Working downfiekl. Old Boys closed in on the Hastings line, but the latter mannged to force. The Blues kept up tlie pressure and repeatedly ran ko onslaughts on tlie Hastings line. A good treak by Grenside relieved, but Old Boys went back to it, Svraons being held up in the goal rnoutb. and from tlie scrum, Hastings forced. - A miss by Botherway enabled Hastings to clear, but Old Boys went downfield again and Hastings had to force on tlirec separate occasions. A fine rush by Milson, Bramwell, Shephnrd and Grenside followed, the latter boing pnshed out in the corner. Old Boys cleared from the line out and went back to the attack. Mill, Bramwell and Grenside figured in some nice eomhined work, which looked promising, but from a scrum near mid-way, Botherway secured and passed out to Attwood. The latter streaked down the line at a great pacc and badlv beating Grenside and Kingston, scored a creat try near tbe corner. Millar's kick was a poster. Old Bovs kept up the attack. but were unable to find a liole in tbe defence and a niinute qr two later. the final whistle was blown, with the scores Hasting- 18 Hastings H.S.O.B. ... 9 Mr M7. O'Neill controlled the game.
