DOMINION'S MINING INDUSTRY. SATISFACTORY YEAR RECORDED.

WELLINGTON. Last night. Tbe Minister of Mines (tbe Hon. W. A. Veitch) announced that tlie output of coal in tbe Dominion during the past year, according to returns jtibt completed, constitutes a record. Tbe total output was 2,436,6S7 tons, as compared wth a record put up in the previous year of 2,366,14.0 tons. The Minister remarked with satisfaction on the result of the year's working 111 tlie mines. The total number of persons einployed in the mining industry during tbe year was 53S0, an increase of 22. Imports of coal for tlie twelve moiiths amounted to 248,052 tons, whioli is 130,038 tons less than was imported during 1927 28. Tbe quantity exported was 125,093 tons. or 1S,347 tons less than in the previous year.
