THE WEEK'S WORK.

THE FLOWER GARDEN. The soil is now in splendid condition for the planting of Spring flowering subjects. Stocks, cinerarias, pansies, lceland poppies, eati be planted. Anemones, ranunculi, can be planted vith success. Those planted earlier are now well through the ground, and should have (he surface hoed. Any further planting of daffodils and such like should be made without delav. Chrysanthemums are now at their best; it is necessary, however, to see that the stakes and ties are secure. No weeds should be allowed to grow close round the chrysanthemum stem, as thcy encourage slugs, and also prevent the production of strong cuttings. Dahlias are still flowering, and where the plants are attended to, are still producing fair blooms. Prepare the ground for rose planting by deep digging and well manuring. Where it is intended to plant shrubs, trees or hedge plants, the ground should be prepared by having the subsoil broken up. Transplanting of evergreen trees and shrubs can be done now. Dig a trencli a good distance away from the tree, and gradually work in towards the free until a sufficient ball of soil is left. Newly prepared ground for lawns should be sown as soon as possible. Those that were sown earlv should he cut. with the scythe when ready. This is a good time to secure the r.ames of a few trees or shrubs which are ovnamental in Autumn. Owing lo the lack of heavy storms the Autumn colourings of some trees and shrubs are very fine this season.
