A vory enjoyable iunction took place on "tlie lawn'' of Ihe Hastings Women's Rest ground yesterday afterlioon. wlien tlie laclies of the Hastings Plunket Society and Women's Rest, Hastings Conimunitv Club. Hastings District Nursing Associaton, and the Free Kindergarten combined to express their very genuine apprcciation of the work of lioth Mr and 3Irs G. A. Maddison in conticction with these institutions. 31iss Elsie Williams. president of tlie Plunket Society, presided over the gathcring. and in a sliort. hut liappy speecli refcrred to tlie wonderful interest both guests liad taken in the iimtitutioiis representod at the gathcring. Mrs Lowry spoke on liehalf of the Coniimmity Cluh, Sfrs •!. B. Pickering for tlie District Nursing Association, and 3Iiss Ford for the Free Kindergarten and eaeh sneaker gave genuine praise and tlianks to both Mr and Mrs Maddison for their great interest and lielp in tlie various organisations. All speakers sincerclv regrcttod the lo.ss of 31r 31addison. not only as Mayor of Hastings, hut also as "father" of tlie niovemcnls eoncerncd. 3Ir G. F. Roacli. tiie newly- elected Mayor. spoke in a similar straiu At the conclusion of tlie speeciics 3frs J. II. Williams, on helialf of those present. asked Mr and Mrs Maddison t.i noeept a handsome beaten copper fire screen and coal scuttle of unique design as a, mark of apprcciation of their many great serviees. 3Irs Maddison was also tlie recipient of a heautiful houquet, presented bv little 3Iiss F.unice Dann. 3Tr 3Iaddison, in replying on helialf of liimself and liis wife, stressed the inipovtanee of the great work that these institutions were doing in the community, and assured thern that although lio had relinquished liis position as Mayor, lie would continue to take an intercstain their work and lielp in any way he could. He paid tribute to tlie work of 31 rs ITagenson, matroii of tlie 3Yonien's Rest, wliom he said was a tower of strensrth to tlie ir.stitution He assured tliose present that the new 3fayor and couneillors would also prove svnipathetic to thc societies representod, for they could not hclp hut rcalise tlie wonderful work whieh was being done and would 110 doubt give everv possible assistance. At tlie conclusion of thc presentation an cniovahle afternoon tea was served, hringing a very pleasing afternoon to a close.
