DUCK SEASON
a ^ THE JXTELLIGENCE OF BIRDS. PREVALENCE OF SMALL BAGS. The season for duck shooting this year lias made many "guns" of Havelock to have a grievance, for ducks wero plentful, hut too wary for the hunters. It secms tliat thc day bcforo the season opeucd tlie ducks wero nuinerous in many places, but after the first morning the ducks congregated in tho reserves. It is certain that ducks wero vcry laro at Havelock and Pukahu this year and the mau who brought lioino auy feathers for his trouble was rather lucky, for nobody has reported the hagging of many hraces. _ Many stayed out all night waiting for the dawn and saw not a fcather. Oue "gun" says tbq Acclimatisation Society should dcal with ttuner ducks like the libcratcd pheasants, which will come to a farinyard and line up with the poultry at feed time. It is very difficult to mako a medium course which will allow of ducks being sliot in great numbers and yet ensure the suppl.v for next year. Closcd or short iseasons, to augment the supply cJf ducks, are not made withoufc oceasion. and the reserves, also, are most necessary if tho feathered game is to he had at all.
