CENTRAL HAWKE'S BAY RETAIN SUB-UNION SHIELD. HASTINGS BEATEN BY THREE POINTS. Under ideal conditions, and before a large attendance, the Central Hawke's Bay Sub-Union yesterday retained the Sub-Union Sbield against * a challenge from the Hastings Sub-Union, winning an exciting gaine by 19 points to 16. The first half of tlie game, which was played at Waipawa, was all in favour of the homesters, who r.an up 11 points. The first try came from a fine liandling bout that conveyed the leather to Ruru and the Hawke's Bay representativo cvinger drew all the opnosition to liimself and shot the ball infield to Parker, who went over in a good position. Moorhead added the extra points. Central Hawke's _ Bay scored again throngh the initiative of Moran. Tbe second five-eigliths, receiving tbe bail from a scrum, stab-kicked. Richardson, tbe big Onga forward. followed up fast ancl toucbecl down. He failed to improve. From tbe kick-off a splendicl passing rush, with in aurl out passing be"tween Moran ancl Ruru, saw the latter scoie an expellent try Ricliardson missed the kick. A fine piece of work between Michac! and_ Hasse'tt resulted in tbe former scoring in tlie corner. Beuth added the major points with anotlier excelleid kick. _ The game wa3 now very fast, both sides having alternate turns on attack. Central Hawke's Bay scored next when Moran neatly cut out three men to send King away. The latter was collared near tlie goal line, but Richarclson snapped up and divecl over under the posts. He coiro-erted tbe try. Hastings then came again, and a rusb downfield bv Caldwell rtnd Crawford. with tlie ball at tbeir feet. ended in the latter scoring under tlie posts for Beuth to convert. Hastings were now continually attacking, and after n great run Crawford transferred to Hani, to scoi-e iu tbe eorner. Rei, wlio bas been chosen to play for Hawke's Bay in the Ranfurly Shield match on Saturday, did not play for Central Hawke's Bay, for whom Ruru was outstanding at centre three-quar-ter. Moran dicl mueh effective won: at second five-eighths, while Richard£on played a great forward game. For Hastings, Beuth, at five-eiglitlis, and Wilson, full-back, were the be^t of a very even rearguard, whilst Ilassett did yeoman service in _ the forwards. Crawford. the Hastings wing forward, was particularly prominent.
