RAILWAY DEPARTMENT'S NEW POLICY. CONSTRU CTIO N OF BRTDGES.
WELLINGTON, This dav. T11 n. statement to the press to-day the Hon. AY. B. Taverner gave some interesting particulars regarding the programine of the Railway Dcpartmenfc. The polic.v of giving New Zealand industries as muc-h support as ])ossil)le is exemplified in the reeent acceptance ot tenders for the Ngaruawahia and Whenuakura bridges. Sfceel plates and slinjx's of a total weiglit of 500 tons will lte imporfcecl from Great Britain. but the whole of the fabrieation of the steel work will be done in the Dominion. The successful tenders are Messrs Ropo and Co., for Ngaruawahia and Messrs Bird and Codling Bros., for Whenuakura. In addition to the encouragement of local industry, these bridges mark the beginning of an extensive programine of reconstruction of old timber bridges in steel and concrete, to take tbe heavy tyne of engines_ now employed. The Whenuakura bridge is 011 the Marton- New PJymouth section, between Rangitrnra ancl Patea. The Ngaruawahia bridge crosses the Waikato river.
