WANGANUI DEFEATED The Big Game At Dannevirke 35 TO THREE VICTORY.
DANNEVIRKE, Saturday. Dannevirke was in the tliroe^ of Winter's grip this moruiiig, but conditions improved towards the afternoon and it was fine but overcast when the Hawke's Bay reps. took the field in the last match of the sea.son against Wanganui. The ground was in good order and the attendance very satisfactory. The Bay kicked off wtih a light wind at their back, and were immediatelv aggressive, getting to tlie Wanganui quarter, where tlie Blucs relieved, but soon after Glenside had a shot at goal from a free-bick, tlie ball falling short under the cross-bar, Wanganui forced. A little later the Bay again attacked, but Seott relieved a dangerous situation with a punt to toucli, and a little later tlie Blues invaded Bay territory. Some time elapsed with quiet plav, and Wanganui got the ball from tlie sci-um in a goocl position, but failed to make use of it, and Evans kicked out to lialf-wav. BAY OPEN THE SCORING. Later, Mills was sent away by Gemmcll and McDonald, and got down to the Wanganui quarter, where he was grassed. Maintaining the pressure, Cairns got the ball from the lineout and forced his way over. Grenside adding the major points. Hawke's Bay 5 Wanganui 0 On resuming, there was a long period of dull play between the two quarters, until S. Gemmell hroke away from a line-out in midfield and got within 10 yards of the line. He sent 011 to McKay, whose pass was missed hy ' Roaeh, and a good chance was missed. A little later Grenside had an nnsuccessful sliot at goal and created amusement by som acrohatics on the ground a little b ,jr. The Bay niaincained a steady pressure, but Cameron and Heise were responsible for sending the Magpies back to their side of tlie line. The Bay again attacked and Smith got into difficulties, being lucky to find a way out. • A feebl'e kick by Scott again put Wanganui on the defensive, Sam Gem-. mell iiassing infield, but nothing came of the chance and a free kick was giyen against the Bay. BAY SCORE AGAIN. A nippy run hy Ruru took the game to half-way. Tlien tlie game suddenly livened up, Klills making a fine attack and getting on the line, where a nielee occurred. Suddenly play flashed across the field, and from a screni a few yards out Heffernan made a futile grab for possession, hut Iloacli got the leather and forced his way over, topping off an exciting piece of play. Grenside failed with the kick. Hawke's Bay 8 Wanganui 0 Wanganui again attacked. McLennan figuring prominently in the picture, hut the Bay soon retaliated, S. Gemmell lieacJing a forward onslaught which carried the ball to the Wanganui 25 where it went out. Soon after play was held up tlirough Duncan, the Wanganui half. "being knocked out. Soon after resuming, jlie Bay forwards broke awav in the A\ anliui 25, Gemmell starting an attack in which McKay and Crawtord participated, the last-named getting over. Wilson failed to convert. Hawke's Bay 19 " Wanganui - 0 The Bay now had their opponents temporarilv shattered, and Grenside and Caims scored in quick succession, Ruru failing to convert the fonner, while Grenside converted the latter. Hawke's Bay 27 Wanganui ... 0 McDonald was conspicuous for a good solo run, which ended frujtlessly. THE BAY LET UP. Then the Black and Whites let up a hit, and Wanganui got down to their 25. . ... For about the third time in the spell McLennan tried to run tlirougli the Bayites, hut did not get far, and then Crawford hroke awav, supported by Gemmell, and shifted tlie g&me back into the Wanganui territory, and soon

For a time Wanganui were in the Bay territory find reward seemed within sight when Evans missed the ball on the line and Ross seemed likely to score, but Botherway kicked the ball from his gra'sp and forced.
