Repairs are being carried out by the Hawke's Bay County Council to the drovers' paddock at Tangoio. To assist the Salvation Avmy annual self-denial appeal the matron and nurses of the Bethany Maternity Home will be holding a street day to-morrow. Tbe Napier City Council has carried out improvements to tlie ligliting in Latham street, materially improving tbe highway for tbose abroad in tbe .evening. Tbe Hawke's Bay County Council are carrying out improvements to the roadway past the Napier Park Racecourse at Greenmeadows. The road boundary is being pushed back about ten feet and the work is progressing steadily. Heavy rainfall fell in Napier yesterday and again last night, and tbe showers were also experienced in the country. Pastoralists state that the rain will be of great benefit to the grass, particularlv on the hill areas, where the feed has shown signs of drying up early. On his recent flight from Hastings to Auckland, v. Captain White, of the Hawke's Bay Aero Club, encountered a heavy fog near Atiamuri, and the airman was forced to follow the road, as other landmarks were invisible. The journey from Hastings to Auckland was completed in 3½ hours, compared "with ten hours taken by a Napier motorist on a recent week-end. There was an audience of leaseholders at the meeting of the Napier Harbour Board yesterday to hear the debate on the question of valuations. Once during the discussion one of the gentlemen pres'ent interrupted with some comment 011 a statement heing mad© hy one of the speakers. The ehairman issued a general warning tliat if there was further interruption the hecklers would be requested to leave, and from then on the gallery followed the debate with keen but silent interest. Thirteen tons of live industrial rahbits, mostly of the chinchilla hreed, some of them for Hawke's Bay fanciers, arrived in th© steamer Remuera, which arrived at Auckland 011 Tuesday. Lest alarm should be caused by these stupendous figures, it sliould be explamed tliat the "ton" referred to is the ton eubic measure. A party of 27 Tamesanian farmers will make a comprehensive tour of Kew Zealand this month, arrangements fox* which have heen completed by the Railway Department. So far as known. the tourists will' not visit Hawke's Bay. The visitors will arrive at- Bluff on Sunday, October 13, and will tour both islands, arriving at Auckland on Oc.toher 30. They will leave for Sydney on'Friday, November 1. The itinerary includes visits to Invercargill, Gore, Queenstown, Dunedin, Ashburton, Christchurch, "Wellington, Palmerston North, Hamilton, Rotorua and Wairakei and Taupo. In the last three mentioned districts the tourists will inspect the State Forestry plantaions and nurseriee. The competition was judged hy Mrs Way, first honours going to Mrs Paterson with Mrs Bain a very close second. A roll call for "hints on gardening" was productive of much instruction and Jxractical advice, each memher giving ler view on the many. and varied tribulations of a gardener from the sorrel pest to many.others. Mrs Paterson's talk on gardening was listened to with mucli appreciation and as an instructive address was well worth hearing. After a deliglitful afternoon tea served hy the hostesses, Mrs* Jessep and Mrs Moore Harvey, an. exchange of seedlings followed. The singing of tlie institute hymn and a liearty vote of thanks to Mrs Jessep ended a verv enjoyable afternoon. The joy and gladness of Spring-time is abundantly evidenced on every kand.
