i 1 MOXEY FOR SCHOOL BATHS. i AN AGREEMENT REACHED i .. 1 As is now well kilown, tlie Hastings Y.AI.C.A. recently handed a sum of L10U0 over for tiio purpose oi erccting swimming baths at the Hastings West and Parkvale Schoois. tlie aniount being divided cqually between tlie two scliools. In a letter to tlie Hawke's Ba.y Education Board, the secretary of tlie Y.M.C.A., Mr Eric T. Price, points out that this money was donated to the l'.M.C.A. some years ago by Mr Robert Harding, of Raukawa, to be used by the association in the construction of a swimming pool for the boys. Swimming classes have been formed amongst tho boys, but the association had not been ablc to finance the ercction of the pool, so with the object of euabling iucreased facilities for swimming to be made available in Hastings, the money was offered to the Borough Council, who, however, were unable to accept the offer. With Mr Harding in agreement it was deeided to hand the money over to the tw7o schoois mentioned, under the following conditions : — That the schoois appJy to the Education Board for the maximum subsidy of £200 in each case; that tlie baths be mad© available for use by the generai public at houi's to be agreed upon ; that f'ree use of the baths be granted to aclive Y'.M.CA. members up to a maximum of 2-30 ; that the association be granted the exclusive right to use each bath one day per 'week between 4.30 p.m. and 6 p.m., and exclusive use of the baths on four whole days per year and on four afternooiis during the year (including two Saturdays) between 1 p m. and •6 p.m; the association to have tho riglit to conduct carnivals on such days. In answer to this letter the Hawke's Bay Education Board kas advised the Y.M.C.A. secretary as follows : — "I am directed to iuforni you that the board accepts the offer of £-50U each to the Hastings Wcst and Parkvale School Committees on the conditions set out in your letter. ''The board agrees to grant the concessions stipulated for the free use of the baths by active fiuaucial members of the Y.M.C.A., and also to allow tlie exclusive use of the baths on certain days as set out in your Jetter. "The board further agrees that such concessions shall be maintained until such time as they mav be varied by mutual agreement. "For convenience of administration tlie control of the baths will be vested in tlie respective sr-liool committees, but in the event of any dispute or difficulty arising concerning the concessions granted which cannot be niutuallv determincd bv the board and your association, the board agrees that tlie matter shall be referred to tlie ilayor of Hastings, wdiose decision sliall be final and conclusive and binding on botb parties. "The department lias n oiv granted the maximum subsidies of £200 each for the erection of baths at the schoois and I shall be glacl thcrefore if you will nrrnnge for the transferenre of the donation of £1000 to tlie board."
