ROAD SURFACES

A RATEPAYERS' MEETING OF PROTEST. HELD IN HASTINGS. A meeting of -ratepayers of the Heretaunga riding was held at Mr H. V. Hoadley's residence, Pakowhai road, Hastings, last night to consider the matter of dealing with the Pakowhai and Maraekakaho roads. Mr A. M. Robertson presided and in opening the meeting stressed the serious damage that was being done to orchards fronting tliese routes. Owing to the dense clouds of dust that were driven on to the fruit farms by the traffic on the roads, fully 25 per cent of the fruit was a total loss and this was a serio-us matter to orchardists. The onlv remedv possible was to have the roads laid down in hot mix or some binding matei-ial. Mr C. Lassen, representative of the Heretaunga Riding, explained the position of the County Council regarding road improvements and after considerable discussion it Avas deeided to prepare. strong recommendations to tbe County Council and Heighwavs Board, urging on them tbe importauce of starting the road improvements before tlie Summer came with its intolerabl© dust nuisance.
