THE FLOWER GARDEN.

The present is a good time for planting the more -tender shrubs, suck as lucullias, hibiscus, , houganvilleas. Po|;-grown climbers and shrubs can also be planted out now. The ground for the chrysantliemnms should be prepared as soon as possihle. The ground should he ready quite *a fortnight before the plants are put out. Dahlia tubers will be starting, and tliose in store should be hrouglit out into full light. Any varieties in short supply can he increased hy cuttings. Usually division of the old shoots gives an ample supply. Seeds of many animals can be sown in the open now. Asters, phlox, zinnias, salvias, can he raised in the open ground. A little cave, such as protectting from slugs and heavy rains, is . necessary. Seedlings of Iierhaceous perennials, and also annuals, can he planted out. Almost any kind can be put out with success just now. Roses are making a nice growth, and the different colourings of the young leaves and shoots are almost as varied and asspretty as the blooms. At the first signs of aphis sprgy witli a nicotine solution. Where mildew was in evidence last season a spraying with lime sulphur is advisahle. The hoe should he freely used amongst seedlings, etc. Weeds are ,much more easily kept down when they are small.
