The quality of Chide was further proved to be of the liighest grade by liio success in the G. G-. ritead Memorial Gold Cup on Saturday, tvhen, anionvst tliose that lie silenced was the Derby wmner Honouv — a great perfonnance, whon it is taken into accounb that he was allowing Wr G. D. Greenwood s representative eixteen pounds. * * * It lias been taken as an accepted fact that when a good three-vearold iS pitted agamst horses of rnore advanced ages, in a race run over i;l niiles, it is the hest oi' good business t i be assoeiated with the tbree-yeur-old. Tlie argument got badiv punctureo on Saturdav, and now mayhap fhe rtmark will be passed tliat lionour ,s nofc a great three-year-old. * sis * Iiowever, there is another side of the case to he viewed, and tliat is that Chidc is a high-class tour-year-old, lor lie lias proved at the New Zeala* d Cup meeting that lie is well endowed with pate, brilJiancy and stami.ia, tacts conclusively proved by his havmg, at the gathermg, won over mii'es, 2 miles and li miles. * * * His earnings for the just concluded fixture amount ,to £2520 and two gold cups, eaeh of the value of ibU sovs. In addition he also won two othcr races this season, which netted £,4UU, so that liis owner-breeder-trainer has protited to the extent of £2910 as a result of the consistency of the geldmg who, hy the way, on Saturday registered his ninth successive succest. # * * Giide has now accomplished a feat that Ilas lievcr before been chronicled in connection with the New Zealand Cup, Canterbury Cup, and G. G. Stead .Memorial Gold Cup, as the events wero securcd by him m the one season. * * * In tho history of the races a contestant has liad previously anuexed them, bub not m the same season, Warstep c'ead-hcating for first place in the New Zealand Cup, as a tour-year-old, the same season winnmg the Canterbury Cup, while as a three-year-old she scored nr the G. G. Stead Memorial Gold Cup. * -M * It has been a good race for locally tiained competitors, has the Stead Gold Cup, Bobrikoff and Desert Gold winning it twice for Mr T. H. Lowry, Sasanof and Surveyor for Mr W. G. Stead, Razzle Dazzle and Gold Light lor Mr W. Hazlett (both being tramed hy the late Mr S. Waddell, at Greenmeadows), Runnymede for Mr J. S McLeod, and Rapine for Mr A. B. Williams. * * * Lilce Chide, who after winning the Canterbury Cup went on and sueceeded in tlie' G. G. Stead Memorial Go'd Cup, were Laugliing Prince, Limeriek, Rapine. Gold Light, The Toff and Keputation. # * * Of the eight contestauts who feft Hastings and Greenmeadows to compote at the New Zealand Cup meeting icur of them, in Admiral Drake, Wliite T'airg, Toxeuma and Hunting Cry, were Miccessful in their cfforts, as the cpiarlette eaeh won a race, Hunting Cry's turn comiug on Saturday, when he got home in iirst plaee in the Stonyhurst Handicnp, an event confined to three3 ear-olds. :N * * The half-hrother to White Fang, tor tliat is the relationsliip of Huuting Cry to the Stcwards' Handicap winner, was well received locally, as intormatioii from tlie cour.se was receivect to the effect that liis possibilities were of the gilt-edged nature, oue of the certainties that did eventuate at the meeting. * * * Praise, the full-sister to Commendation, followed up Jier success in the Welcome Stakes by scoring in the Pioneer Handicap at Riccarton on Saourday. The iilly must be speedy, as with 9st 71b up she covered the ha'fmile in 48 seconds, and then won :-y a length and a-half.- Her winnings at the meeting-Tesulting in heT owner, Mr G. I). Greenwood, collecting £870 for her earnings. * * * Rabbi has hecn most consistcnt in his displays this season, and has proved profitabl© to follow, leading off as he did with ^ victory 111 tho Masterton Cup, then came a second in the Wellington Handicap, first in tlie Carterton Cup and C.J.C. Mctropolitan Handicap, and a second in the Fendalton Handicap on Saturday. I11 the lattev event his supportcrs got their first cheok fiiiancially, as the dividond returncd Avas short of the purchasing price of his tickets. * * * The Hawk, who lieads the iist of acceptors in connection with the Levin Cup, in which he has 8st TDlb, will, in all probability, be 011 hand to range up for the argument, as be left Hastings this moi'ning for Otaki., where he lias engagements to carrv out at the Spring meeting of tho Otaki Racing Club, which will tako place on AYedlic.sduy and Tliursday. ❖ ^ * Toxeuina and King's Jost arrivod baclc from Riccarton 011 Jfriday night. Last Mark, who accompanied them on their invasion of tho South IsJand, did not return to his box at Greenmeadows, liis own-breeder, Mr J. D. Ormond, having sold him to a patron of Ellis' ostablishment. * * # Last Mark, who was sufl'cring from kidncy disorder at Riccarton, was uot seen in action at tho New Zealand Cup gatliering. The geldiug when at his best is quite useful, and 110 doubt in his new location, if well placcd, will pay his way in good style. v * * Toxeuma, who has had a husj7 time of late with racing and travelling, does not look a hit tlie worse for his cxertions, for lie presents brightness in tho eyes and glow in the coat that betokens he is in tlie hest of health. Blessed with a great constitntion and even temperament, it is therefore casily understood how succesfully Toxeuma 6tands up to the stress and strain of the arduous life.
