HA31ILTOX, Last nighfc. Raids were xxiade by the police in various Waikato towns ' this morning ou premises suspected of being run as common ganxing houses. As a i;esult five axrests were made at Hamilton, wiiile ot-hers were effected at 3Iorriusville, 3Iatanxata, Rotorua and Te Puke. The xaid was on an organised basis. It was the lax-gest ever cOndueted in the Hamilton police district, and wa» carried out with precision and thoroughness and was orer before anv of the owners of the raided premises had the opportunity of putting others "wise" to the police operations. At the Police Oourt in the al'ternoon Charles Jackson, haiidresser, and James Henry Doleman, tobacconist, 1 were eacli fined £100, and Robert Irvine and Bat BJoeker £30 for keeping conxxnon gamirig houses aud bookmaking. Iiillary Quinn insurance agent, and Charles O'Brien were eaeh fined £30 for bookmaking. • Tlie 31agistratc, 31 r IVyveni Wilson, said .hookmakei-s were parasi.tes .and shonld jxe . rightly put dpiyn. ..He roferred not only to the ' large tfiit to tlie small bookinaker, as the small booknxaker lived 011 the working mau, who could least alford -to keep hinx. The Magistrate warned licensees of hotels against permitting bookmakers on the premises. Licensees were liable to jeopardise their licenses allowing this sort of tliiiig to continue. At MoiTinsviJle Stephen Bain was fined £100. for keeping a common miining house. J®
