NELSON GOES IN TO BAT. TWO WICKETS DOWN FOR 70 llUNS.
NELSON, This day. Tlie Englishmen commenced the match against Nelson to-day. Tlie weather was fine but cloudy. Gilligan sent Nelson in and at noon the lodal team had two wiekets down for nine runs, Allom taking botli wiekets for tliree runs. Barratt replaced Nichols and Wortliington replaced Allom. Neale and S. Newman batted confidently, tlie latter liitting Barratt freelv to the off. Sixty minutes batting saw 50 up. Woolley missed Newman earl.v. When Neale was 30 he gave a liot one to Gilligan. who missed. Two balls after Woolley just failed to liold a higli return off liis own bowling from Neale. The wiclcet was easy. At lunch two wiekets were down for 70. Tlie scores were : — NELSON. First Innings. Langbein, b Allom 6 Ralfe, l.b.w., b Allom 0 Neale, not out 32 S. Newman, not out 27 Extras 5 Total for two wiekets 70
