BOXING DAY—WHERE WERE THE BUSES.

WM. SMYTH.

(To tlie Editor.) Sir, — Yes, sir, where were tlie Xew Zealand Raihvay buses 011 Boxing DayP I understood tliat rccently the Raihvay Department purchased an additional number of buses and was fuliy prepared to meet and deal with any and all traffic offeriiig on their NapierHastings run. AA'ell, surely extra traffic was to be expectecl on Boxing Day— yet an ordinary, every-day service was run, with disastrous resnlts to those who had faith in tlie department's assurnnce aforementioned. Out of dire necesity for the want of a bus, and after houi-s of waiting. one saw women with babes and push cbairs clanibering 011 to any trnck, or lorry, that- happened along to take thein to Napier. Tn fact all good Samaritans of the road were in full reriuest. Again T ask, where were the department1* buses ? T adniit that it is outside a laymanks province to advise our Railwav Department on what is their own business, but surelv it is as plain as A B.C. tliat on a day sueh as Boxing Day, wlien exh-n, traffic may be expeeted. the rolling stock the bus management claims to have available should be made use of. Again T ask. where were the buses? Thoy must have been somewhej-e ! Bossihlv in the .garage, while nrbfiiahle business was going w"st. However. sir. there is always two sides to a nuostion and it would be interesHtig to hear the Departmeiit's side, — T ain etc..
