VALEDICTORY
SENIOR-SERGEANT DEMPSEY. F ARE WELLED BY COURT STAFF. A very pleasing little function took place at the Hastings Magistrate's Court yesterday afteruoon, when the court staff assembled to bid farewell to Senior-Sergeant J. A. Dempsey, who leaves to-morrow for Wellington. Mr W. M. Will, clerk of the court, m asking the senior-sergeant to accept a pocket wallet as a mark of esteem from the court staff, referred to the cordial relations which had always existed between the police and the court staff during Senior-Sergeant Dempsey's two years' service in Hastings. Hc expressed deep regret at the departure of the senior-sergeant, who had made himself so popular with all, but heartily congratulated him on his well-deserved promotion. Mr J. List also_ spoke in similar strain and Senior-Sergeant Dempsey suitably responded.
