AUCKLAND, This day. .What several Auckland jewellers states is a remarkably large and wellshaped black pearl was found in a mussel on St Heliers' Bay wharf hy Mr L. Duncan, a resident of St Heliers. Mi* Duncan secured it from a medium-sized mussel, wliich he intended to use as bait. The pearl is larger than a pea and weighs 18 grains. Its value is estimated to he well over £50. Mr James Pasooe, an Auckland jeweller, said that the pearl found by Mr Duncan was exceptionally large and of good colour. It should realise a fairly high price on the Australiau market. He recalled a previous case, uearly 20 vears ago, when a European bought a fine black pearl from a Maori hoy for sixpence. A few montlis later he sold it for £120.
