A DRAWN GAME
- \ HASTINGS MEET HASTINGS H.S.O.B. EVEN STRUGGLE AND SMALL SCORES. The main attraction at Nelson Park, Hastings, was the game between Hastings and Hastings H.S.O.B. In the early stages ^ Old Boys had the better of the play. and were quickly six points to the good, but for the remainder of the game, which was even throughout, Hastings held tbem and lnamrged to draw level. The score is a fair indication of the play of the two teams. Old Boys kicked off against a slight breeze and from the first scrum secured the leather and launehcd an attack which ended at the twentyfive line. A nice cut-in by Botlierway took the Blues to near the Hastings line, but the Yellow forwards cleared back to quarter way. Play hovered at tbis point for some time and a penalty in an easy position gave Botlierway a cliance to draw first blood and he made no mistake with his kick. H.S.O.B 3 , Hastings 0 On resumption Hastings attacked strongly but the Blue forwards were on their toes and quickly smothered the Yellow backs, carrying play back to the Hastings quarter, where anotlier penalty came their way again in a handv position. Botlierway made no mistake, and in as many minutes Old Boys were six points to the good. H.sio.B 6 Hastings 0 Hastings took the offensive on resumption,. a series of line-outs following in the Blue half. A mark by Symons enabled them to clear, but Wilson drove tliem back to mid-way. Here .Hutchison made a nice opening but Thompson was pusbed out. Play continued with Hastings on the offensive and a nice passing bout looked promising when Rainbow stopped it with a nice intercept. Jonson was caught in possession and Hastings reached the Blue 25 for the first time. Play went up and down field at a good 'pace, Thompson making a nice break, which carried the Yellows to quarter way. Hannigan again cleared and put the Blues on the attack. This was repulsed, the Hastings backs clearing to mid-way. Hastings were making desperate attempts to reduce the leeway and Hingston got away with a great run. A try looked certain, but the pass went astray and the chance was lost. A minute later Fisher tried to goal from a penalty, but it was too difficult a shot. Old Boys again attacked, but were penalised, Goer lining well up field. Shepherd again broke away, but his pass went forward and from the" scrum Joll dashed away in a promising run. He was up-ended and Wilson sent plnv back to mid-way. Fisher put Hastings on the atfack from.a penaltv,' but the fast Blue forwards drove , them back, Heaton lieading a good. rush to near the Hastings line/ The move was npset by a penalty against Old Boys, but Fisher's kick failed to gain much ground. A fine break by Shepherd, however, changed the venue and Old Boys were compelled to force to avoid trouble. ~ Half-time sounded with the scores : H.S.O.B ... 6 Hastings 0 After lemons Old Boys quickly took the offensive carrying play right down to th'e Hastings line. In an easy position they were awarded a penalty but Botherway's kick was a poor effort. Using the wind well Old Boys continued to attack, their backs working well. Botlierway made a nice run and passed infield for the ball to be kicked through but in a race behind Hingston touched down first. A penalty to Hastings gave Fisher a good chance to line and he sent play down to the Blue twenty-five, where. from a side-line, Fisher placed a great penalty goal. On resumption, Old Boys attacked but they were repulsed and Hastings worked their way to the Blue twentyfive. From a line-out here Hastings gained some valuable ground. _ Thompson was pushed out when in his stride for the line. A passing run hy Rainbow enabled Old Bovs to clear. Hastings were penalised and Botherway cleared but another penalty _ to Hastings put them m an attacking pp-.ition right in the goal mouth. From a scrum here Hutchinson secured and passed to Geor, to Thompson, who dived over in the corner. Fisher's kick 'failed to bctter the position. With the scores even, both teams were on their toes. Play remained at half-way for some time and then Hastings gradually worked up-field where they had the Blues defending hard. Hastings continued to attack two nice passing bouts following in quiek succession, but both were stopped, and the Bluers retaliated with a movement to the Hastings twentyfive. A good .scoring chance was lost by the backs fumbling badly, and Hastings managed to torce. Time was cajled a minute later with play at midway and the scores H.S.O.B. 6 Hastings 6 Mr W. Thurlow was referee.
