THE OVERSEAS MARKET

FOR DOMINION'S DAIRY PRODUCE FOOD FOR THOUGHT BY HAWKE'S BAY DAIRYFARMERS. In view of tlie present low levels, it is sinall wonder that Hawke's Bay daiiyfarmers are anxiously watching the position of the London market for New Zealand dairy produce. Figures issued by the New Zealand Dairy Produce Board indieat© that during the first three montlis of this year, ending March 31, Demnark exported 9043 tons of hutter into England, in comparison to 7072 tons exported to that source from the Dominion. Dominion exports to the Homeland during the first quarter of this year were lieariy 5700 tons less than last year, this being accounted for by the much larger shipments that are being made to Halifax to meet the Canadian trade. Suggestions were made hy Mr Goodfellow, in his remarks made in these eolumns yesterday, that the decline was accentuated by the New York financial slump and by fierce competition amongst the agents selling New Zealand butter to the big buyers. This may be the cause, and if it is, then the methods of marketing our produce call for still further revision. Dominion dairyfarmei-s at least have the satisfaction, if sucli it may be called, of knowing that produce from other countries is getting similar treatment to their own 011 the London market. Oue of the new phases of the situation which is 'of more than passing interest to the Dominion dairyfarmer is the phenomenal rise of the Northern European countries in the daiiy produce export world of late. It appears likely that we will be faced with serious competition from this quarter within the next few years. Food for thought for the future on the part of the daiiyfarmer is contained 111 a statement of exports of hutter and cheese issued by the New Zealand Daiiy Produce Board. Taking the export figures first, it is seen that, although tlie Dominion shipments for March — 9374 tons — were 110 tons less than for the corresponding month of last year, the exports for the eight months ended March 31—68,540 tons — show an increase of 3803 tons compared with the corresponding penod of the 1928-29 season. On the other hand, exports of cheese show a decrease, not only for March, but also for the eight months, compared with last season. The decrease was 85 tons for March (9452 tons)J as against 9537 tons, and 1931 tons for the eight months' period. On the butter shipped in March, 1930, to the United Kingdom, the position at time of shipment was that 91 per cent. was consigned and 9 per ?ent. sold f.o.b. Of the cheese shipped m March, 1930, to the United Kingdom the position at time of shipment was that /S per cent. was consicned and 25 per cent. sold f.o.b. (73° per cent. was white and 27 per cent. coloured). ,For the season ended March oi' ' Per cent. was white and 32 per cent. coloured. . Details of the exports and destinations of dairy produce for the eight months ended March 31 are given in the followmg comparative tables BUTTER.
