VALUES AT POVERTY BAY CATTLE AUCTION. A well-known Hawke's Bay dealer, wlio made a iush trip to Poverty Bay and back, to attend the first day of the Watawhero Autumn cattle fair, stated that while there was a good attendance of buyers and the quality was fair botb in the beef and store sections, the prevailing nervousness on tbe part of vendors was responsible for a substantial drop in values, when cempared witli last year. For quality beef the prices even reached a lower level than those ruling in Hawke's Bay at present. According to the Poverty Bay Herald, the first day's beef entry totalled 68, and included several pens of welllinisbed weighty cows. Bidding was fair with prices well below tliose of last fair. Prime heavy cows made up to £8 10s and good quality cows £6 15s to £7 2s 6d; light and bad colour cows made £4 10s to £5. Bullocks icalised £9 to £9 15s. There was a large attendance, and a fairly good yarding of male store cattle, the quality of which was generally first class. There was a substantial drop in prices" and very little of the entry was sold. One pen of weighty bullocks went to £10 5s, but apart from tbis £9 was reached in only one instance. As an average. Siyr. steers were worth £8, 2jyr. steers £7, and 2 to 2£yr., steers £6 to £6 10s. Extra good pens in some casqj exceeded these figures. Some of the prices were : — Prime heavy Hereford' cows (p), £8 10s; 1 prime stag, no bid ; 2 cows, light, £4 10s; 4 cows, mixed colours, light (p), £5 ; 5 yiows, Hereford cross, good finish, medium weiglits. £7 2s 6d; 1 prime small bullock, (n), £7 5s ; t small Hereford cow, £4 5s : 4 cows, Hereford-Shortborn, heavy finish, £8 qs; 3 good finish, fair size.
