SHARP R1SE IN FAT SHEEP SECTION. HEAYY ENTRY OF PIGS.
CHRISTCHURCH, Last night. With the exception of that for fat sheep, there were heavier entries in all sections of the Addington market to-day tlian have been the case for some weeks. Fat sheep, which were in short supply, recorded a sharp rise of 2s and even more on last week's values. There was also a slight firming in prime beef values of about 2s per 1001b. The other major sectious recorded little cliange. Store sheep : A larger yarding, including an entry of some 2000 lambs. For that section values were a little firmer, but the adult sheep, which were in the main indifferent qualitv, sold draggingly and saies were hard to make. The Chatham Jslands were represented hy what will probably be their last draft this season. Values were :-rMedium ewe lambs 14s to 15s, forward m.s. lambs 11s 6d to 13s 8d, good wetlier lambs 11s to 12s 3d, ordinary wether lambs 8s to 10s 9d, inferior wether lambs to 7s, good twotoot'h Romney ewes to 23s 8(1, good 4, G and 8-tooth Romney ewes to I9s 5d, gcod s.m. Romney ewes to los 6d. f.m. Romney ewes to 7s lOd, good two-tooth half-bred ewes 21s to 23s 8d, ordinary to medium two-tooth half-bred ewes 13s 3d to 18s 9d, extra good 6 and 8-tooth half-bred ewes to 22s, good 6 and 8-tooth 15s 6d to 17s, ordinary 6 and 8-tooth half-bred ewes to 14s, s.m. half-bred ewes to 9s 3d, aged and inferior half-bred ewes 3s lOd to 6s 5d, good 6 and 8-tooth crossbred ewes to 12s 8d, ordinary 6 and 8-tooth crossbred ewes to 13s 9d, good 2-tooth half-bred wethers to 18s, good 4, 6 and 8-tooth half-bred wethers 12s 3d to 15s, aged and backward halfbred wethers to 5s 6d.
Fat lambs :. There was an entry of 3647 head and the sale was a satisfactory one. Butchers' sorts were a little easier, but the export buyers were paying full schedule rates of 6^d to 7id per lb. Values were — Extra prime lambs to 26s lOd, prime lambs 22s 6d to 24s, medium lambs 20s to 22s, light lambs los to 19s 6d.' Fat sheep ; There was a very small entry, about 2200 sheep, and as a result of the short supply values rose hy 2s a head for prime sorts of both classes, and even more. Values were — Show wethers to 36s Id, extra priine ' wethers- to 33s 9d, prime wethers 29s to 31s 6d, medium wethers 25s 6d to 28s, light wethers 19s to 24s 6d, show ewes to 28s, extra prime ewes to 27s, prime ewes 21s to 24s, medium ewes 17s to 20s, light and aged 12s to 16s^ Fat cattle. — A heavy entry of 585 head included consignments from the Chatham Islands and several hig lines of station steers. The quality of the yarding was very mixed. Prime beef sold at values a little above those of last week, but there was little change in prices for plain beef, for which there was an indifferent market. Best medium weight beef made from 40s to 43s and in odd eases a little over that figure, medium quality from 34s to 36s 6d, heavy steer from 36s to 39s, good cow 28s "to 30s, secondary 24s to 27s down to 22s. Values were: Extra prime heavy steers £19 10s to £20 17s 6d, prime heavy steers £16 15s to £19. prime medium weight steers £13 to £16 5s, ordinary quality steers £10 10s to £12 10s, light steers £7 10s to £10, extra prime heifers £13 IQs to £15 7s 6d, prime heifers £10 10s_ to £13, ordinary heifers £8 to £10, light heifers £6 5s to £7 I5s, extra prime cows tb £15 17s 6d, prime cows £9 10s to £12, 'ordinary cows £7 10s to £9, light and aged cows £5 to £7. Vealers. — There was a large entry, but the 'bulk showed lack of finish. Good vealers sold equal to recent rates, but there was no demand for other sorts. The top price was £7 18s 6d. Store cattle. — The entry of store cattle was a poor one and consisted chiefiy of cows. Prices were much the same as they were last week. Good calves made from 30s to 50s, best cows up to £5 10s, yearling and 18 months steers np to £5 10s, and potting bulls to £8. 1 Dairy cattle. — There was an entry of 69vhead and the quality was average. There was a keen demand for good cows close to profit and a dragging sale for the remainder. Values ' were : Best second and tliird calves to £15 15s, others £4 15s good £11 to £13 10s, otbers £7 to £10 IQs, Fat pigs. — There was a heavy entry of porkers and the result was a decline in value by 7s to 10s a head. The large entry of baconers sold at values little above those of last week. Values were : Choppers £3 to £7 3s 6d, pork- , ers 42s to 51s, heavy porkers ,53s to £3 5s, average price per pound 7-J-d to 8)d ; light baconers £3 7s 6d to £4, heavy baconers £4 2s 6d to £4 14s 6d, extra heavy baconers to £5 Is 6d, average price per lb. 6Jd to 7^d. Store pigs. — Medium entry, but saies were hard to- make in most- cases. Values were: Large stores 28s to 32s, others 17s to 25s, slips 14s to 17s, weaners 7s to 12s.
