UNEMPLOYMENT
POSITION IN HASTINGS. IMMEDIATE RELIEF REQU1RED. At the last meetin^ of the Hastings Uuemployment Relief Committee it was reported that there -were now 166 naines 011 the unemployment roll, of which 26 were returned soldiers, who would be assisted hy the R.S.A. fund and the Govermnent subsidy. Some of these men have large families and an urgelit appeal is made for assistance. A schedule of works has now been sent to the Public Works Department for approval and as soon as it is returned relief will commence. A total of 16 men have been sent to the Public Works Department's new road at Wairoa. The Mayor, Mr G. F. Roach, is still in communication with the Government regarding the subsidy question. Tt is pointed out that in some cases immediate relief is necessary and residents who are able to offer even two or three days' work are asked to communicate with the borough engineer, stating the nature of the work availahle and.alsp i.f.tools are .pr.ocurable.
