GOING INCLINED TO BE HEAVY. DOINGS AT ELLERSLIE.
AUCKLANI). This day. The weather wr.s sbowery this morning for training work at Ellerslie, bnt there was a large attendance of spectators, who were provided with some interesting work. No. 1 grass trac-k was open for fast work and there was some schooling over the hurdles erected on the outside of the course proper and also on the steeplechase course. Tlie going was inclined to be heavy. During a schooling task this morning Rawhetu fell and hroke his leg and had to be destroyed. His rider, F. Foster. was sent to hospital. Among the steeplechase candidates , to go well were Matu. Manganii and Master Lu, while Mister Gamp, Aurora Borealis and King's Jest made good displays over the hurdles. Good , perfonnances on the flat were also registered 'bv Maori Boy, Seatown, Eager Rose and Nancy Lee. On the grass Eager Rose was first : out, runniilg the first three furlongs in 39secs. and completing six furlongs in ' 1.20. | Odin and Freyja were sent over a round whicli took 2.1, the ' :st mile taking 1.52 2-5. Odin was going better . at the finish. IT' Catoma went alone'. taking 42 l-5secs for the first three furlongs and 1.25 | 1-5 for six. ' Hoariri and Maori Boy jumped off together at the syt ftirlong post, the former being in front until they turned for liome, when Maori Boy, on the outside, beat him in the run to the post. The first three furlongs took SDsees. and the full distanee 1.19 2-5. Maori Boy pleased most. Pahu, who was not after time did strong work, gomg about seven lur longs. This horse is looking well. Nancy Lee was timcd to run home From the five furlong post in 1.12 1-5. doing it nicely. Air Laddie went very freely over six furlongs in 1.24. Currajong, Spring Abbey and Roman Pearl were companions over six furlongs, running the distanee in 1.23 1-5. Thev were bunclied at the finish. Marble Mount traversed a round iu 5.1. This geldinsr is on the improvo. Grattus and Goldhke were together at tbe end of six furlongs in 1.23 4-5. Brampton, Patutahi and Neil were sent over six furlongs, running the last five furlongs in 1.10 3-5. They finished together. Seatown and Mendip, who are botli engaged in tlie Cornwall Handicap, jumped off at tlie seven furlong post and after running the first three furlongs in 41 4-5secs., finished the task in 1.38. Seatown, who was on the outside, appeared to be going well. Gay Cpckade was not doing liis best to run six furlongs in 1.26 1-5. Elysianor. carrying a light weigbt, traversed. round iil 2.ll 1-5. Bold Front and Valsier were about on terms at the end of a seven furlong taTsky wliich" took '1.35 3-5. Imperial Prince and Principal finished in front of Perfecto over six! furlongs, which took 1.25. Roman Abbey did strong work over a round, taking 1.41 2-5 for the last seven furlongs. * Pottpeius was allotted a seven furlong task and completed it in 1.42 3-5. Aurora Borealis (H. Dulieu) completed a schooling task over five hurdles. Considermg that slie was alone her showing was very satisfactory. This rnare is in first-class condi'tiou. -\Vako King(J. Burgess), Dark Prinee fW. Rowe) and Harbour View (H. Dulieu) were * also sent over five hurdles. Dark Prince fell at tlie first and the other pair completed the round safely. Penny Plain (Rennie)', Four Aces (McRae) and Archibald started off over four hurdles. Foui* Aces fell at the first and Archibald lost his rider at the third. The last named got in tlie way of Penny Plain at the last and Penny Plain was pulled up, but a little later jumped the last . o'bstacle all right. Four Aces was remounted and got .over^the otlier fences safely. King's Jest (Stanway)" and Mister Gamp (Bowden) were companions over five hurdles, completing their task safely. King's Jest" slipped after landing over the fourtli fence. but otlierwise the display was good. Mister Gamp also got througli liis work well. Rongo (Leach) gave a safe display over four fences. ... Over the country Matu (Jenkms), Mangani (H." Dulieu), Lucess (N. Syme). Nukutere (\V. Rennie) and St. Warrigal (Turner) were tlie first to set out' over the big. fences. C0111mencing at tlie sod wall, they went over the water jump, stonewall and brush' and contiuued up the . hill. Lucess. Mangarii and St. Warrigal were iu front, with Matu and Nukutere following. Nukutere was eased up after jumping the second fence on the hill and on Teaching the course proper Mangani and Lucess were nulled on to it, while Matu and St. Warrigal continued 011 over the fences. On the flat Matu gave a good display and the others also fenced well. -There was not a great deal of pace 011, which makes it difficult to sum up. Airtight (Tncker) and Rawhetu (F. Foster) also set out for a round over the big fences, commencing at the snrl wall at the top of the straight. Rawhetu did not jump the obstarie too well and fell while jumping the next fence, the first of the double. He broke his leg and had to be destroyed, while Foster received abdominal mjuries and had to he sent to hospitaj. Airtight continued 011 and gave a fair display. though he did not jump the water jump too well. Master Lu (Spinksl and Hymestrason (Jenkins) were allotted a similar task. but Hymestrason fell at the ftrst of the dou'ble on the hill. He ivas remoiyited and completed the rest of the journey safely. Master Lu gave a good display. Riding engagements are as follows : — T. Green will ride , Seatown, Gold Monev, Air Laddie and Valr„eina. C. Goulsbro will be on Pompeius^ Derry BelJe and Red Day. Tucker will pilot Copey.
