THE POPULAR APPLE
RESULT OF WORLD BALLOT. JONATHAN SECURES FIRST PLACE. OF INTEREST TO HAWKE'S BAY FRUITGROWERS. The Jonatlian is a variety of apple, the cultivation of which has in late years considerably inereased in Hawke's Bay orchards, although tlie Delicious variety, for whicli the distiiqt is famous, still holds pride of place, in respect to numbers grown. It shouid therefore be of particular interest to Hawke's Bay fruitgrowers to lienr tliat in a recent iuternational ballot to discover the most popular apjile, Jonathan was given first place, with Delicious fiftli. At the International Horticultural Congress, Mr W. T. Macoun, Dominion horticulturist, of Ottawa, ga.ve the results of an interesting investigation that lias recently been carried out, says the London correspondent of the Otago Times. A questionnaire was addressed to over 100 people representing' 170 countries, provinces, States, and colonies, calling for the names and varieties of apples that are most popular witli the rich and middle classes and with the labouring and poorer people, and asking what kind of an apple is liked from the standpoint of size, sliape, colour, flesh. and flavour. It appears that a red apple attracts the largest. number of people of all classes in practically all countries, China appearing to be nearly the only exception. In England the _most popular apples for eating raw in Summer are the Gladstone and Beauty _ of Bath, with James Grieve running from Summer to Autumn. During the Summer season apples from overseas, especially from Australia and New Zealand, come to the market, and Delicious, Gleopatra, and Jonathan are those most liighly regarded. For Autumn Woreester Pearmain, James Grieve, Ellison Orange and Lord Lambourne appear to be tlie leaders. Of Winter varieties tbe Cox's Orange : is the leader, with Ribston and Blenlieim for those who desire a change, or cannot afford Cox's Orange all the time. The Newtown Pippin aml Delicious seem the most popular varieties from America. The three outstanding British apples are Cox's Orange, Woreester Pearmain and Bramley. Examining the lists given by correspondents in many parts of the world, and taking into' consideration botli their' cultivation and popularity in different countiies, and also tlieir wide distribution and value export, one is inclined, Mr Macoun said, to place 12 of the most cosmopolitan and important varieties in the following descending popularity 1 Jonathan, 2 Winesap, 3 Newtown Pippin, 4 Gravenstein, 5 Delicious, 6 Cox's Orange, 7 Mclntosh, S Red Astrachan, 9 Rome Beauty, 10 Yellow Transparent, 12 Esopu's Spitzenburg,
