HAWKE'S BAY UNION MEETS. ' MATTERS OF INTEREST. The usual monthly meeting of the Hawke's Bay branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held in Hastings on Saturday, Mr R. E. Talbot presiding. A letter was receired from the Tutira branch, asking for support to (1) That the Government be requested to accept unlimited amounts in the post office savings bank at current rates of interest; (2) that the Government be requested to pass legislation enahling monev to be telegraphed to racing clubs for investment on Lh© totalisator and that the revenue be used for the relief of unemployment. It was decided to support the first resolution, but members considered that the second one was outside the scope of the nnion. BLACKLEG. The Dominion Secretary advised that owing to the interest among North Taranaki farmers * regarding hlackleg, the Department of Agriculture had advised that the only places m. New Zealand where hlackleg existed was in parts of A.uckland and Taranaki, but the incidence of hlackleg could not ke said to be high. Very often, deaths of calves which were rcported as due to hlackleg were due to otlier causes, and during the past year the department liad "inoculated 24,693 calves against the disease. No compensation was payable for losses due to blackleg. INCREASED BANK CHARGES. . In repy to a protest against the increased Bank charges, the Dominion Secretary _ reported that the Acting Prime Minister had advised that although the Government oonsidered that the time was inopportune for any increa-se owing to the eeonomic depression, the matter was one lietween the banks and their customers and the Government could not directly interfere.
