THE FISCAL PROBLEM.
STATEMENT BY MR. ARNOLDFORSTER. THE PROPOSED CONFERENCE. [press association.] LONDON, Ist December. Mr. H. O. Arnold-Forster, Secretary of State for War, in the course of a speech at Croydon, said the proposed colonial conference would meet, despite the Right Hon. Mr. Asquith and others. Every sensible man, Mr. Forster said, ought to give weight to the collective Avisdom of the people of Great Britain, Canada, and Australasia, thus enabling the Empire to meet unfair attacks on trade, and to strengthen the solidarity of the Motherland aiid the colonies. Nineteen Conservative members of the Cambridge University Senate have declared a lack of confidence in Sir J. E. Gorst (who has represented the University in the House 6f Commons since 1892), and have intimated that, owing to his action during the past two years, they inteild to nominate another Parliamentary candidate. Sir John refuses to resign, and has announced that he intends to stand in the interests of free trade at the next elections.
