GLOAMING WINS THE DERBY
DESERT GOLD SECOND IN SPRING STAKES.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPTTRISHT.) SYDNEY, 6th.October. The weather at Randwick was fine, the attendance large, and the going good, for the first day of the A.J.C. Spring Meet-. ing. New Zealand horses monopolised the Derby, filling the first four places, Almoner being fourth. Gloaming was favourite, and never left the issue in 1 doubt. He at once went.'to the front, and ■was never headed, although Finmark made a desperate effort. ,At the distance Deeley had little to spare, but Gloaming responded like a champion. Rebus created a surprise in the Epsom Handicap by beating the greatly-fancied trio Panacre, Publican, and The Destroyer. For the first hall mile Killowen was prominent, but dropped back Bimeter was never forward. Rebus and Norbury fought out a good finish, and the outsider (Rebus) scored. Although the absence of Biplane and Estland detracted from, the interest in the Spring Stakes —which looked a walk-over for Desert Gold—the race provided the greatest excitement. After practically leading throughout, Desert Gold, ridden by O'Shea, succumbed to Poitrel's vigorous challenge,. Bracken snatching_ the honours at the post, after a magnificent finish in record time. Results:— First Hurdle Race, a handicap sweepstakes of 2 soys. each,'with 400 soys. added; about two miles. —H.H: Rajah of Pndnkota's'b g Lord Nagar, 10.5, 1; Dr. F. Adam's eh g Montauk, 11.2, 2; A. Trial Stakes, a sweepstakes of 10 soys. each, with 500 soys. added; one mile and a quarter.—C. S. M'Phillamey's br h Redburn, 8.1, 1; H. J. Robinson's b g Greg, 8.5, 2; Fuller and Constable's b g First Rain, 7.2, 3. There were twelve starters. Won by three-quarters of a length. Time, 2min. B|sec. A:J.C Derby, a sweepstakes of 20 soys, each with 5000 soys added. Pot three-year-olds. One mile and a-half. —G. D. Greenwood's b g Gloaming, by The Welkin—Light, 8.10 (B Deeley), 1; T. H. Lowry's eh c Finmark,-8.10 (J. O'Shea), 2; G. L. Stead's b c Kilmoon, 8.10 (D. O'Connor), 3. There were twelve starters, including Almoner, Kilbarron, and New Zealand. Woorawa. and Gloaming were' the first to move. Gloaming quickly went to the front from Outlook, Finmark, and Kilmoon. This order was unchanged at the mile. Kilmoon moved up at the half mile. Gloaming was first into the straight from Kilmoon, Outlook, Finmark, ' and Almoner. At the distance Gloaming came away, and easily stalling off Finmark's challenge, won by a length and a-half, five lengths separating second and third. Time, 2min 33isec. Epsom Handicap, a handicap sweepstakes of 20 eovs each, with 1500 soys added. One mile.—J. Lemon's cli.h Rebus, by Radium—Quibble, syrs, 9.0 (A: Wood), 1; C. G. Barnes's b g Norbnry, 7.10, 2; H. Bolton's b h Quaestor, 7.10, 3. There were twenty-seven starters, including Killowen and Bimeter. Won by a length and a-quarter, the third horse a length and a-half away. Time, lmin oßsec. Spring Stakes, a sweepstakes of 10 soys each, with 1500 added. Weight-for-age. One mile and a-half.—W and T. A. Moses's eh h Poitrel, by St. Alwyne—Poinard, 4yrs, 9.0 (K. Bracken), 1; T. H. Lowry's b m Desert Gold, 6yrs, 9.1 (J. O'Shea), 2; W M. Borthwick and J. Laycook's eh h Kennaquhair, 9.0, 3. There were eleven starters. Poitrel and-Desert Gold were the first away. The latter went to the front from Cagou, Prince Viridis, and Thana. In the straight Desert Gold maintained a good lead and looked like a winner. At the distance > Poitrel challenged hei, and after a. great finish, Poitrel got home in the last stride by a short head. Two lengths separated second and third. Time, 2min 31sec— a record. Kensington Handicap, a handicap sweepstakes of 10 soys each, with 500 soys added. Seven furlongs.—J. O.
